Precision work down to the thousandth of a millimetre? No challenge too big …. or too small!

We investigate complex questions from various customers and find a suitable solution for them. Customers regularly come to us asking if we can make something extremely precise. For our craftsmen, it is only natural to work with extreme precision. Below you can read some sample requests:

Client’s request: Can you make something that requires extreme precision?

Several companies regularly approach us with this question. We will first name some questions so that an idea can be given of what precision sizes we are talking about.

• This customer asked if we could make 700 holes in a disc. These did not have to be ordinary holes, but each with a diameter of 0.115 millimetres. In addition, the tolerance should not exceed 0.005 millimetres.
• Another customer came with a request for a product with a mirror plane roughness of 0.05 Ra, which will be used to adjust a heavy laser.
• Yet another client engages us for high-precision finishing of hardened tool steel (60 HRc).

So these are not just any requests calling for neat and precise work, but precision down to the thousandth of a millimetre. This makes this type of job one of the bigger challenges within our applications. Fortunately, we do not shy away from a good challenge!

The technical challenge

Now we already saw that Mevi delivers precision work. Sometimes the required specifications are so precise and the tolerances so minute that a standard 3- or 5-axis milling machine will not suffice. In that case, we look further into other options and leave ‘standard’ behind. We love a challenge and like to get the maximum result from an application. Thanks to our professionals and the knowledge we have in-house, we often come up with new and surprising outcomes in which we can eventually tick off the customer’s entire list of requirements.

The solution: a high-speed hydrostatic milling machine

With an ordinary milling machine, we would not achieve the desired result. This is why we had to start looking at other options. A high RPM was what was really necessary. So we ended up with the hydrostatic milling machine and invested in a new machine. Namely the Kern Pyramid Nano, a hydrostatic 5-axis milling machine with an incredibly high speed of up to 50,000 rpm. This ultimately allowed us to meet the aforementioned challenges without any problem.
Now we can also handle similar requests directly in the future.
